Before you begin
In order to obtain a Registration for your vehicle in Kentucky, you first must have Titled your vehicle.

In-Person Registration / Renewal

Registering for the first time

Please visit the County Clerk's Office in your county of residence​ to register your vehicle  in person. When registering your vehicle, be sure to bring:

  • Photo ID
  • Current original (not a copy) of proof of Kentucky insurance* (issue date within 45 days**)
  • Money for fees and applicable taxes (check with your County Clerk's office for accepted forms of payment)
  • The current title (for first time title and registration applicants only)
  • The current registration receipt (if the vehicle was previously registered out of state)

Renewing your Registration

Please visit the County Clerk's Office in your county of residence to renew your vehicle registration in person. When renewing your registration at the County Clerk's Office be sure to bring:

  • Photo ID
  • Kentucky certificate of registration
  • Current original (not a copy) of proof of Kentucky insurance* (issue date within 45 days**)​
  • Money for fees and applicable taxes (check with your County Clerk's office for accepted forms of payment)
*Military exemption: Out-of-State insurance is acceptable if the customer is Active Duty Military (that individual must be listed on the title of the vehicle). Examples of acceptable proof of Active Duty Military are: Active Military ID , a letter from the Provost Marshal, LES (pay stub). 
 
** The "45 day issue date requirement" does not apply to: Military, Commercial, Self-Insured policy types.

    Online Registration Renewal

    The following information is required to begin online registration (all of which can be easily found on your most current registration):

    • Title Number
    • Plate Number

    Requirements and Restrictions

    • A list of eligible plates is available online​
    • Vehicles registered in separate counties to the current owner must be renewed separately.
    • Leased vehicles cannot be renewed online.
    • The vehicle(s) renewed must have unexpired registration(s).
    • The owner of the vehicle(s) cannot have overdue property taxes on any other vehicles they own.
    • Vehicle(s) must be currently insured with a company that is registered with the Kentucky Department of Insurance to be eligible to renew online. If you have obtained insurance within the last 45 days, your information may not be in our database. This will prohibit you from renewing your vehicle online. Please visit your County Clerk's office to renew.
    • The Service members Civil Relief Act exempts certain military personnel from paying personal vehicle Ad Valorem tax. To find out if you qualify for the exemption, please contact the Property Valuation Administrator’s (PVA) office in your county of residence. Click here to find your county PVA.
    Be Sure Your Address Is Correct
    Take a look at the address on your registration receipt. This must be your current address. Registration materials are mailed to this address.
    If your current address does not match your registration receipt, please contact your County Clerk and have it updated before you register online.

      Renew Online

     Fees, Payment Methods & Processing

    • Online renewal transactions are not complete until the County Clerk processes your information. Please allow at least 5 working days following your online renewal for processing of information and mailing of credentials to you.​
    • The online renewal service is provided by a third party working in partnership with the Commonwealth of Kentucky. A portion of the fees collected in this transaction includes funds to develop, maintain, and enhance the state’s official web portal, Kentucky.gov.
    • A $2.00 fee per vehicle will be added to cover mailing costs.
    • Payment methods include VISA, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express.

    Processing Timeframe

    If the Registration renewal request is submitted before 12:00am midnight EST, your local county clerk will receive the request the following business day for processing.

    Delivery

    The address on the registration renewal notice must be your current address. Registration materials will be mailed to this address within 5-7 business days. If your current address does not match your registration renewal notice, please contact your County Clerk.

    Common Questions and Issues 

    • If you have obtained insurance within the last 45 days, your information may not be in our database. This could prohibit you from renewing your vehicle online. Please visit your County Clerk and provide proof of insurance and process the renewal in person.
    • If your information appearing on any screen is incorrect, click Cancel and contact your County Clerk.
    • If you did not receive your registration renewal notice, you may still renew your registration or contact your County Clerk​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​.
