Confident Kentucky

Schedule

Kentucky is creating REAL ID regional driver's license offices across the state to make new REAL ID compliant driving and identity credentials available to Kentuckians who prefer to use them for travel and access benefits. Other federally approved documents, like a valid passport or passport card, are accepted for U.S. air travel.

The majority of offices are currently closed due to COVID-19. The Transportation Cabinet will gradually reopen regional offices when feasible to ensure a sustainable level of service that prioritizes the health and safety of our citizens. Here's what we're doing to keep you safe and what you should expect when you visit an office.

The Frankfort office will reopen on Monday, May 18 to serve applicants from any county who meet one of the following criteria:

  • Replacing lost/stolen permit, license ID card
  • New Kentucky resident with valid out of state credential
  • Require card for employment or emergency
  • Renewing card that expired before state official order took effect on March 18, 2020

All applicants must have successfully completed any required KSP testing. Applicants may request a standard or REAL ID card version. Schedule an appointment online or walk-in during office hours.

Cardholders with a credential that expired March 18 or after March 31 are under a 90-day extension through an emergency executive order.

Residents from all 120 counties are welcome to apply for a REAL ID license, permit or identification card at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in Frankfort (200 Mero Street). REAL ID regional driver’s license offices are open in the following counties and are currently equipped to best serve residents of the county where the office is based. The capacity will expand this spring to serve the region and more offices will open across the state before the October enforcement date.

While we do our part to open offices as quickly as possible, the most important thing you can do to save time and avoid repeat trips when applying is to get prepared. To learn what required documents you need to update and gather now, take the IDocument Guide quiz or review a list of acceptable documents.
