​IMPACT OF SB 124 ON TESTING REQUIREMENTS

With the passage of SB 124 on April 8, 2022, Kentucky driver's license holders whose license is expired for more than one (1) year but less than five (5) years will no longer be required to take the written knowledge and vision tests to renew their license.

  • Driver's License Holders: A Kentucky driver who is expired as specified above can make an appointment at one of the KYTC Driver Licensing Regional Offices or submit a mail-in renewal form.  

  • Commercial Driver's License Holders (CDL holders): A Kentucky CDL holder with an expired medical certificate over one year but less than five years will no longer be required to take the written knowledge and vision tests to obtain their commercial license. Kentucky CDL holders that have been surrendered over one year but less than five years will no longer be required to take the written knowledge and vision testing to obtain that license.

  • The New Law Does Not Apply to:
    • ​Drivers whose driving privileges are SUSPENDED 
    • PERMIT holders of any type (including intermediate) ​​​
    • ​Drivers TRANSFERRING in from out-of-state
    • Drivers whose commercial status was changed before 04/8/22​
