Interstate Carriers

​​​​​An Interstate C​arrier provides transportation services across state borders and is required to register with the Secretary of Transportation while an intrastate carrier has its operations entirely within one state.​

1. ​​Are You a Private or For-Hire Carrier

  • Private Carrier- Transports personal goods or property.

  • For-Hire Carrier- Transports others' goods for payment.​

2. What is Your Vehicle's Total Weight?

  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)- the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single motor vehicle.

  • ​​Combined License Weight (CLW)- ​the greater of: (a) The declared combined maximum gross weight of the vehicle and any towed unit for registration purposes for the current registration period; or (b) The highest actual combined gross weight of the vehicle and any towed unit when operated on the public highways of the state during the current Registration. Per  KRS 138.655 Subsection (14).

​​A USDOT # is not required. If picking up and dropping off the same cargo For-Hire Carrier in Kentucky, you will need KY Intrastate For-Hire License. You will need to fill out the TC95-1​​ ​form and mail to KYTC . Directions are included on the form.

​A USDOT # is required (apply via FMCSA ) and must be displayed. If For-Hire, Federal Motor Carrier Authority (MC #) required  (apply via FMCSA ). If the power unit has 3 or more axles, International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) license is required. International Registration Plan (IRP) may be required. Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) is required. If picking up and dropping off the same cargo For-Hire in Kentucky, you will need KY Intrastate For-Hire License. You will need to fill out the TC95-1​ form and mail to KYTC . Directions are included on the form.
