Intrastate Carriers

​​​​​​​An Intrastate Carrier transports goods ONLY within a single state whose final destination is within the state from which it originated.​

1. ​​Are You a Private or For-Hire Carrier

  • Private Carrier- Transports personal goods or property.

  • For-Hire Carrier- Transports others' goods for payment.​

​2. What is Your Vehicle's Total Weight?

  • Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)- the value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single motor vehicle.

  • ​​Combined License Weight (CLW)- ​the greater of: (a) The declared combined maximum gross weight of the vehicle and any towed unit for registration purposes for the current registration period; or (b) The highest actual combined gross weight of the vehicle and any towed unit when operated on the public highways of the state during the current Registration. Per  KRS 138.655 Subsection (14).


​​​FIND YOUR REQUIREMENTS

​ ​​All Intrastate For-Hire Carriers must have their insurance company file a Form E (Proof of Insurance) with KYTC Motor Carriers. Further instructions available on TC95-1.​

​A US DOT # is not required. If For-Hire Carrier, you will need KY Intrastate For-Hire License. You will need to fill out the TC95-1​​ form and mail to KYTC. Directions are included on the form.

A US DOT # is required (apply via FMCSA) and must be displayed. If power unit has 3 or more axles, Kentucky Intrastate Fuel Tax (KIT) license is required. Must follow safety requirements. If For-Hire Carrier, you will need KY Intrastate For-Hire License. You will need to fill out the TC95-1​​ form and mail to KYTC. Directions are included on the form.


​A US DOT is required (apply via FMCSA​) and must be displayed. Kentucky Intrastate Fuel Tax (KIT) license is required. If For-Hire Carrier, you will need KY Intrastate For-Hire License. To apply for KIT and/or KY Intrastate For-Hire License, you will need to fill out the TC95-1​ form and mail to KYTC. Directions are included on the form.
