Low-speed vehicle (LSV) is a four-wheeled motor vehicle that is self-propelled using an electric motor, combustion-driven motor, or a combination thereof and is designed to operate at a speed not to exceed twenty-five (25) miles per hour as certified by the manufacturer.
An
Alternative-speed motorcycle (ASM) is a three-wheeled motorcycle that is self-propelled using an electric motor, combustion-driven motor, or a combination thereof. It also has a fully enclosed cab, includes at least one (1) door for entry, and is designed to operate at a speed not to exceed forty (40) miles per hour as certified by the manufacturer.
APPLYING FOR AN LSV OR AN ASM TITLE
Low-speed vehicles and Alternative-speed motorcycles manufactured after 1981 must have a 17-character VIN to be titled and registered in Kentucky.
For In-State Vehicles
To apply for a Title for an LSV or an ASM, you will need the following:
For Out-of-State Transfers
To apply for a Title for an out-of-state ATV, you will need the following:
Photo ID
Current original (not a copy)
proof of Kentucky insurance effective date within 45 days
Completed TC 96-182 or signed-over title (if your state only issues a registration or a bill of sale, bring those in place of a signed-over title).
$9.00 application fee
Sheriff's inspection
If your name on the title differs from your ID, you must provide an affidavit showing they are the same.
DUPLICATE LSV OR ASM TITLES
To apply for a duplicate Title for your ATV, you will need the following:
Photo ID
Completed TC 96-182, including the owner and vehicle identification sections.
Title number OR license plate number
$ 6.00 duplicate title fee
If you move out of state and need to apply for a duplicate title, contact the
County Clerk's office in the county where you previously resided. You must complete form TC 96-182 when providing your new out-of-state address.
VEHICLES NOT ELIGIBLE TO BE TITLED AND REGISTERED AS AN LSV:
ATV/UTV/OHV as outlined in KRS 186A.070, .074, and KRS 189.010(24)
Military Surplus Vehicles, as outlined in KRS 186.010 and 186A.073
Golf carts used explicitly for golf and that do not contain the necessary designation on the C of O and/or that do not meet the safety requirements of 49 CFR 571.500.
