MILITARY PERSONNEL WHO HAVE RETURNED TO KENTUCKY

  • If a Kentucky resident has been serving in the United States military and has allowed their operator's license to expire, they shall be permitted to renew their license within 90 days of returning to the Commonwealth without having to take a written test or road test. Residents of the Commonwealth serving in the United States military must comply with the renewal requirements for their operator's license.

  • ​Prior to expiration or within 90 days of returning to the Commonwealth, military personnel are permitted to renew their license without having to take the written or road test by visiting a regional office or registering for a POPUP event​.

  • A Kentucky resident serving in the United States military who does not renew their expired license within 90 days of returning to the Commonwealth shall be required to comply with all procedures of renewing a license that has expired.

REQUESTING A VETERAN DESIGNATION ON YOUR IDENTITY CREDENTIAL

​Kentucky offers a Veteran designation on Kentucky driver’s licenses and ID cards to honorably discharged Veterans. Apply in person at any Kentucky Driver Licensing Regional Office. 

​Veterans are required to provide a copy of one of the following documents as proof of eligibility:​

  • VA ID card or VA Health ID card

  • NGB22​

  • DD257

  • DD256

  • DD214​


RENEW YOUR VEHICLE REGISTRATION

​​Active-duty military members can renew online or through their County Clerk's office. Some offices will renew by phone, but this is county-specific, and the customer would need to contact the Clerk's office to see if the option is available.

  • If an individual has been serving in the United States military station or assigned to a base or other location outside the boundaries of the United States, they can renew the registration on the vehicle within 30 days of their return if the vehicle was stored on a military base and it expired during their absence.   KRS186.020 (6) (a) (b) (c)

 

​VEHICLE INSPECTIONS FOR MILITARY (OUT-OF-STATE):​

A vehicle inspection is required for all out-of-state vehicles; you will need to take the application (attached), proof of insurance, vehicle and title to the local Sheriff's Office for a vehicle inspection.  The sheriff's office will use the application to verify the VIN number listed on the current title and verify their vehicle inspection that ensures the vehicle is roadworthy in accordance with Kentucky Revised Statute 186A.115. Once the vehicle inspection is complete, you will take the documentation and apply for a Certificate of Title and Registration through the County Clerk's Office.


​Military personnel who are residents of Kentucky can have the Sheriff Inspection done by the post provost or similar officer of the camp, post, or station. The affidavit should state:

  • Name of owner

  • Identification or serial number (VIN)

  • Make, body, style,

  • Current license or title number, if any, and

  • State in which currently registered or titled if any.

 

For the Clerk's office, you will need:

  • TC 96-182 form

  • Photo identification

  • Current title and registration

  • Money to pay applicable fees and taxes

​The charges incurred will be as follows:

  1. Sheriff's Inspection- $5.00

  2. Title Fee- $9.00

  3. Lien Fee- $22.00

  4. Registration/Plate Fee- $21.00 (standard issue plate)

  5. 6% tax charged on the NADA value of the vehicle (for further guidance on vehicle tax assessment, please contact the Kentucky Department of Revenue at 502-564-4455)


REQUESTING A MILITARY LICENSE PLATE

Kentucky offers 37 license plate designs for motor vehicles and motorcycles to honor the service and sacrifice of eligible Service members, Veterans, retired Service members, and their families.

Applicants can request these license plates through their local County Court Clerk. All license plates may be issued for non-commercial motor vehicles that have a gross weight less than 10,000 lbs. and may be personalized for an additional fee. Applicants who are unsure if they are eligible for a specific license plate can contact the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs at 800-572-6245. ​​​

Eligibility Requirement

Show proof of eligibility to the County Clerk - a current military "Armed Forces of the United States ID card" or the Department of Defense Form 214 (DD-214) that states the condition of discharge or discharge papers.​​

At the time of Issue and renewal, $5.00 of the fee goes to the Veteran's Trust Fund. For more information, please visit http://veterans.ky.gov. Military plates can be personalized for an additional $25.00 application fee annually. The application must be made at your local County Clerk's office. This personalized plate is limited to a maximum of 5 characters.
