Kentucky Weight Distance (KYU)

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ KYU is a tax license issued for all carriers ​traveling on Kentucky roadways with a combined license weight greater than 59,999 pounds. Under KRS 138.660​, the tax rate is computed at the rate of two and eighty-five hundredths cents ($0.0285) per mile.​ ​You can also purchase a one-time temporary KYU Permit per truck if you are not making regular trips through the state of Kentucky.​

​APPLY FOR A KYU LICENSE​

​You must set up a Kentucky ID Gateway account before applying for a KYU number. For KYID troubleshooting guides and video tutorials, please visit the KYID Troubleshooting page.

  • KYU Numbers are issued upon completion of the ONLINE KYU Application.

  • For assistance, view our KYU Registration Guide or send questions to tax.dmc@ky.gov. ​​

  • If you are having technical issues processing an Online Application, you can print and mail a completed TC 95-1 Kentucky Trucking Application Form. Emailed or mailed KY Trucking Application Forms take 10 – 14 business days to process.


Farm-plate vehicles are exempt from the KYU tax.​

KYU​ ELECTRONIC FILING​

  • You must have a registered Kentucky ID Gateway account to file taxes electronically. For KYID troubleshooting guides and video tutorials, please visit the KYID Troubleshooting page.

  • The KYU license requires quarterly tax filings regardless of travel for all qualified vehicles through KYU E-File.

    • 1st Quarter:  January – March – Filing Opens April 1st

    • 2nd Quarter: April – June – Filing Opens July 1st

    • 3rd Quarter: July – September – Filing Opens October 1st

    • 4th Quarter: October – December – Filing Opens January 1st '

    • ​If you did not travel during a quarter, you must file zero miles to avoid a penalty, interest, and a revocation fee of $500

  • Update KYU inventory online through the Motor Carrier Portal. All qualified vehicles must be listed to avoid citations.

  • Acceptable payment methods include Credit Card or ACH. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Motor Carriers, will require KYU Weight Distance quarterly tax returns to be filed and paid online through the Motor Carrier Portal pursuant to KRS 138.685. If you have any questions or concerns,​ please contact tax.dmc@ky.gov.​​​

Carriers can use KYU E-File to amend a return to increase reported miles. Contact the Division of Motor Carriers to amend a return to decrease reported miles.​​

CLOSING A KYU

  • To close your KYU Account, all Filings must be up to date, and fees must be paid.

  • During the Last Filing, click the “Yes” to Ceased Operations question. You will receive an email confirmation if it was closed or denied, along with the reason.

  • If you need to close your KYU in the middle of a Quarter, the Filing still needs to be completed, and Ceased Operations must be selected on that filing.
