An Official Website of the Commonwealth of Kentucky
In Kentucky, you have an option of a standard driver’s license or ID, or a REAL ID version. With federal REAL ID enforcement in effect as of May 7, 2025, Kentucky driver’s licenses, permits or identification cards without a black star cannot be used at airport security checkpoints for U.S. commercial air travel or to visit federal facilities that require ID (like the White House or military bases). You have options, and we can help!
Currently 49.5% of Kentuckians – 1.8 million- have a state-issued REAL ID.
Arrive prepared and save time at your appointment. Take the Idocument Guide quiz to learn what documents you need to bring with you to apply for a REAL ID.
New pricing is in place to account for the doubled renewal cycle and additional security features of REAL ID credentials.
To apply for a REAL ID, you must bring all required documents in person to any Driver Licensing Regional office.
