• Eligible drivers can renew their driver’s license online through a verified myDrive account.
• To renew online, you must create a myDrive account and securely connect it to your driver’s license with a letter ID from a KYTC Document.
• A vision screening is required before renewing a driver’s license.
• You cannot renew online if you want to upgrade to a REAL ID. The upgrade must be completed at a Regional Office.
• If your information has changed, you will be required to upload documentation to confirm the change.

• A vision screening is required to renew a Kentucky driver’s license or permit.
• Vision screenings can be completed at no cost at any Regional Office at the time of renewal. No additional appointment is necessary, and the screening takes less than a minute.
• Drivers may also choose to complete a vision screening with a vision specialist or KYTC-credentialed medical provider and submit the completed TC 94-202 Driver Vision Testing Certification Form. The screening must have been completed within the past 12 months. The TC 94-202 Form is the only document accepted as proof of vision screening.

• As of May 7, 2025, Kentucky standard driver’s licenses and IDs will no longer be accepted for boarding U.S. domestic flights or accessing certain federal facilities, such as military bases or the White House.
• Drivers may choose to upgrade to a REAL ID when renewing their driver’s license or permit in person at any Regional Office. Drivers must bring the required documentation.

• Drivers over the age of 21 can renew a license or permit up to six months before the expiration date.
• If you’re under 21, your license expires 90 days after your 21st birthday and cannot be renewed before your 21st birthday.
• No testing is required if your license expired within the past 5 years.
• If expired over 5 years, you must reapply as a new driver.

• Kentucky residents currently serving in the United States military who are stationed or assigned to a base or other location outside the boundaries of the Commonwealth may renew a Class D operator’s license by mail/email, utilizing the form TC 94-28.
• This option is also available to their spouse or dependents who are living with them.
• The renewal application must be mailed or emailed to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
• Kentucky residents currently serving in the United States military who are stationed outside the Commonwealth are exempt from renewal vision testing requirements. This exemption also applies to the service member’s spouse and dependents.

Requests to mail a license to an out-of-state address may be approved under the following circumstances. Proof of address is required for all requests. The following groups may qualify for mailed renewal:

• Snowbirds: Temporarily living out of state for the winter season.
• FEMA or Government Workers: Deployed or stationed elsewhere for emergency or official response.
• College Students: Living out of state during the academic year.
• Doctors and Nurses: Working in out-of-state medical facilities.
