Kentucky residents may not need to visit a Driver Licensing Regional Office to renew their driver’s license or ID. This short quiz helps determine whether you can renew online through the m​yDrive portal​ or by mail. Answer a few quick questions below to identify the best option for you.

Can You Skip the Line?

Answer a few quick questions to find out if you can skip a trip to a Driver Licensing Regional Office and complete your service remotely.

What do you need to do?

Visit a Regional Office to upgrade to REAL ID. First-time Kentucky REAL ID card applications must be completed in person because identity documents must be reviewed.

Are you renewing a permit?

Permits must be renewed in person.

Please visit a Driver Licensing Regional Office to renew your permit.

Note: A vision screening is required to renew a permit

Do you need to update the name on your credential in addition to the renewal?

Option 1: Renew online through myDrive.

To renew online, you’ll need to create an account and link it to your Kentucky credential. Customers will need a unique Letter ID alphanumeric code from a KYTC document dated on or after June 6, 2026, issued within the last 60 days to connect your account to your credential.

Don’t have a letter ID? Request one to be sent by mail when creating your myDrive account, or visit a Driver Licensing Regional Office. Delivery typically takes 5–10 business days.

Note: For a license renewal, you'll need to either visit a Regional office to complete a vision screening or upload your TC 94-202 Form, completed and signed by a vision specialist or KYTC-credentialed medical specialist.

Option 2: Renew by mail.

Complete the mail-in renewal form and include any required documents.

Do you need to change your name on the replacement?

Option 1: Request a replacement online through myDrive.

To replace a lost or stolen credential online, create or sign in to your myDrive account and link it to your Kentucky credential.

You will need a unique Letter ID alphanumeric code from a KYTC document dated on or after June 6, 2026, issued within the last 60 days.

Option 2: Request a replacement by mail.

Complete the mail-in form and mail it to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

What information do you need to update on your credential?

Name changes must be completed in person. Please visit a Driver Licensing Regional Office and bring proof of your legal name change.
