Vision Screening Requirement

SAFE DRIVING REQUIRES GOOD EYESIGHT.

Effective January 1, 2025, vision screenings will be required for anyone renewing a Kentucky driver’s license.

601 KAR 12:120E  KRS 186.577

This new requirement, passed by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2021, aims to enhance highway safety by ensuring all drivers maintain good vision throughout their driving careers. Regular vision screenings help identify any impairments that could affect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely, protecting both the driver and others on the road.

Kentucky joins several other states, including Indiana, Ohio, and Missouri, in adopting mandatory vision screenings for license renewals. The goal is simple: to ensure drivers have the visual acuity necessary for safe driving.

Be prepared to complete a vision screening when renewing your Kentucky driver’s license starting in 2025.

OPTIONS FOR DRIVER'S LICENSE RENEWAL
New state law effective January 1, 2025

Vision screenings can be completed AT NO COST at any KYTC Driver Licensing Regional Office at the time of renewal. No appointment is necessary, and the screening takes less than a minute.

Drivers may instead ask their vision specialist or KYTC-credentialed osteopath, physician, or advanced practice registered nurse for a vision screening. Drivers who pass will receive a Driver Vision Testing Certification Form from their provider to bring when renewing their license. The vision screening and Driver Vision Testing Form must be completed within 12 months of a driver’s license renewal visit at a regional office.
NEXT STEPS AFTER VISION SCREENING

IF YOU PASS

Proceed to renew your license.

IF YOU DO NOT PASS

Drivers who do not pass their vision screening at a Drivers Licensing Regional Office or with a KYTC-credentialed medical specialist will be referred to a vision specialist for secondary vision examination and any corrective lenses.

Vision specialists may then fill out and sign a TC 94-202 Driver Vision Testing Certification form, confirming their patient can safely operate a vehicle and proceed with license renewal. Drivers will then bring their certification form to the Driver Licensing Regional Office when renewing their license. The form can also be uploaded through the online license renewal portal, or included with a mail-in renewal application.
