Drivers License and ID Card Online Renewal

​​​​​​​​​​​​​KENTUCKY LICENSE AND ID CARD ONLINE RENEWAL GUIDANCE

​ PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION BEFORE PROCEEDING:


Beginning January 1, 2025, a vision test will be required to renew a Kentucky driver’s license. Online renewals will still be available. Customers who pass a screening with a vision specialist or KYTC Credentialed Medical Specialist will be able to submit their signed form online. More details to come.

1. ​ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS​​
  • ​​​You may renew your license, motorcycle license, combination driver/motorcycle license, or ID card online up to six months before expiration or within one year after expiration.

  • Ensure all personal information on your current license (name, address, license class) is current. If any details have changed, please visit a Regional office or renew by mail.

  • Lost or stolen credentials cannot be renewed online at this time.​​


2. UPGRADE TO A​ REAL ID:
  • ​​​​​​Beginning May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID or another acceptable federal form of ID to fly within the United States, visit military bases, or enter a federal building that requires ID. ​Determine if a REAL ID is right for you

3. CARDS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR ONLINE RENEWAL:

  • Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) and permits.

  • Voter and Homeless ID cards (in-person renewal required).

  • Under-21 licenses (vertical format). If the cardholder has reached their 21st birthday, then they can renew online.

  • Licenses for non-U.S. citizens.

  • Active duty military members should use the Military Personnel Mail-in Renewal Form.​


​ ​4. PAYMENT INFORMATION:​​

  • Accepted payment methods include Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express (debit or credit).

  • A processing fee applies: 1.5% for debit cards and 2.75% for credit cards. If your application is not approved, no charge will be made. Refunds are not available once a renewal application is submitted.​


5. ADDRESS VERIFICATION AND CARD LIFESPAN​:

  • During the application, verify that your address is accurate, as your new credential will be mailed to this address.

  • Your new card will retain the same lifespan as your current license (e.g., a 4-year renewal period if your existing card is 4 years).

By submitting a renewal application, you confirm your eligibility and agree to the terms. Applications are for personal use only; fraudulent submissions will be prosecuted.



The applicant will NOT receive a temporary document after renewing online.​
