INTER-INTRASTATE CARRIER GUIDANCE

One-Time Application Reminder: Interstate for-hire carriers only need to apply once for a Kentucky Intra For-Hire Certificate. It stays active as long as valid insurance is on file.

WHERE DO YOU FIT IN?

PRIVATE CARRIER

Transports personal goods or property.

INTRASTATE FOR-HIRE

Transports others' goods within Kentucky for payment.

INTERSTATE FOR-HIRE

Transports others' goods across state lines for payment.


INTRA-4-HIRE CARRIER APPLICATION

  • Review instructions before applying for intrastate passenger authority.
  • An insurance carrier authorized to transact business in Kentucky must file a Form E – Uniform Motor Carrier Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability Certificate of Insurance with KYTC Motor Carriers before submitting an application. Liability coverage must be in compliance with KRS 281.655.
  • All Intra-4-Hires must have at least one vehicle available before Motor Carriers will grant a certificate.
  • Passenger vehicles require a county clerk–issued plate.

FORM E REQUIRED

All Intrastate For-Hire Carriers must have their insurance company file a Form E (Proof of Insurance) with KYTC Motor Carriers.

FARM VEHICLES

Farm plated and Farm Limited vehicles require a USDOT # only.

CONSUMER COMPLAINT

Submit form TC 95-622 if you have concerns about a passenger carrier.

WHAT IS YOUR VEHICLE'S TOTAL WEIGHT?

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The value specified by the manufacturer as the loaded weight of a single motor vehicle.

Combined License Weight (CLW): The greater of:

  • (a) The declared combined maximum gross weight of the vehicle and any towed unit for registration purposes for the current registration period; or
  • (b) The highest actual combined gross weight of the vehicle and any towed unit when operated on the public highways of the state during the current registration.

Less than 10,001 lbs. GVWR
10,001 – 26,000 lbs. GVWR
Greater than 26,000 lbs. CLW
60,000 – 80,000 lbs. CLW
Greater than 80,000 lbs. CLW
