Licensing Steps for 18-20 Year Olds
Get a Driver’s License
Schedule a written and vision test appointment with the Kentucky State Police.
Before your KSP testing appointment, complete your pre-application in MyDrive. You will need to create a myDrive account to access the pre-application.
Bring all required documents to your testing appointment.
After holding your permit for 180 days, schedule a road skills test appointment with the Kentucky State Police.
A licensed driver age 21 or older must accompany you to the testing site.
Vehicles used during testing must be properly registered and insured. One of the following is accepted as proof:
Bring one valid proof of residency if your current address differs from the one listed on your permit.
View Kentucky State Police-approved driver training schools if you want additional behind-the-wheel instruction or classroom support.
Yes. You must first obtain a learner’s permit and hold it for 180 days before taking the road skills test.
Yes. Written, vision, and road skills tests must be scheduled with the Kentucky State Police.
You must hold your permit for 180 days before taking the road skills test.
A licensed driver age 21 or older must remain seated in the passenger seat while you are driving.
If you fail the written test, you may return the next available day to retake it. If you fail the road test, you must wait seven days before retaking it.
