Permit Driver Restrictions

These rules and restrictions apply to permit drivers under 18 and must be followed at all times while operating a vehicle. Review carefully before driving. Violations may delay licensing progress or result in additional penalties.

Rules and Restrictions

Supervised Driving Only

Permit holders may only drive when accompanied by a licensed driver who is 21 years of age or older and seated in the front passenger seat.

Passenger Restriction

The driver is limited to one unrelated passenger under 20 years of age.

Late-Night Driving Restriction

The driver may not operate a vehicle between 12:00 a.m. (midnight) and 6:00 a.m. unless there is a good cause for driving, such as an emergency, school activity, or work-related need.

No Pass / No Drive

The driver will not receive credit during any period of suspension for failure to comply with KRS 159.051 (opens in a new tab) , also known as the No Pass / No Drive Law.

Zero Alcohol Tolerance

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is prohibited. All drivers under age 21 are subject to Zero Alcohol Tolerance, defined as a blood alcohol concentration of .02.
