Get a Driver’s License

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Required documents for applicants under age 18
Document Type
Proof of Identity Original birth certificate or certified copy.
Social Security Number Social Security card required as proof.
Proof of Residency One proof of Kentucky residency (two for a REAL ID).
If the applicant does not have a proof of residency in their name, the parent/guardian can provide proof of residency in their own name to confirm that the applicant lives with them.​
School Compliance School Compliance Verification Form issued by the applicant’s school.
Parent or Guardian Signature A parent or legal guardian listed on the birth certificate must sign the application.
If the parent/legal guardian is not listed on the birth certificate, court-ordered paperwork is required.​

GRADUATED DRIVER LICENSING COURSE

Drivers under 18 must complete an approved Graduated Driver Licensing Program (GLP) course before applying for an unrestricted license.

Parents and guardians play an important role in deciding when their teen is ready to drive. Drivers under age 18 cannot apply for a permit or license without a parent or legal guardian signature accepting responsibility.
